Species at Risk Assessment

Butternut Health Assessment

Butternut trees are currently listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act due to a fungal disease (butternut canker) that affects the trees. To assist the species in its recovery, a provincial program of certified Butternut Health Assessors (BHA) was established to properly identify and assess butternut trees, their origin, and probability of survival.

FSmith Consulting Inc. is a BHA. By hiring a BHA, landowners can ensure that they are following their due diligence in adhering to provincial regulations. If any work is planned on or near a butternut tree, a butternut health assessment is required.

Black Ash Assessment

In 2022 black ash was listed in Ontario as endangered due to the persistent emerald ash borer (EAB) infestation and increasing habitat loss.

FSCI has trained staff confident in identifying suspected black ash in your wooded areas and guiding you through the process of what that may mean for the future of your property following the most up to date regulations surrounding this species at risk in Ontario.
